The bailouts would not have been necessary if Greenspan and Co. were not given a free hand to do whatever they wanted. Their point of view, that the 'invisible hand' of the marketplace would take care of matters, is still be subscribed to by Congress. Unfortunately, the invisible hand is now being used to slap down the auto workers, their unions and the entire industry. Why is it that the auto industry is being left to die in the shards and remnants of our Bush bankrupt economy while we prop up useless entities like AIG? I don't get it. Does anyone else?
